As of February 2023, Yamaha Motor will start using green aluminium as a raw material for parts in Yamaha motorcycles after reaching an agreement with an aluminium ingot supplier. The use of green aluminium in Japanese motorcycles is a first1, and Yamaha Motor wants to steadily increase its use in upcoming generations.

Compared to conventionally refined aluminium, "green aluminium" is aluminium that has been refined with renewable energy sources, which results in a manufacturing process that emits about 60% less CO2. Of course, the amount of emissions reduced by renewable energy varies by manufacturer. Green aluminium is one efficient strategy for lowering CO2 emissions from the raw material manufacturing phase of a product's life cycle because it makes up between 12% and 31%2 of the overall vehicle weight of a motorcycle (falls under Scope 3 Category 1 emissions for supply chains).

Yamaha Motor has actively promoted the use of recycled aluminium, which now accounts for around 80%3 of Yamaha Motor's aluminium utilisation, by developing its engineering and production capabilities and skills. This green aluminium is being introduced as a supplement to that and will be used for components that can still not be made from recycled materials. Yamaha Motor will use green aluminium in its large-displacement and off-road competition motorcycles as a first step for a few parts, and Yamaha Motor intends to increase the number of models using the material in the future as supply volumes permit.

According to the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Strategy 2050, the corporation wants to become carbon neutral4 by the year 2050 throughout all of its operations, including its entire supply chain. Yamaha Motor has set a target of using only sustainable materials for all of its motorcycles manufactured in Japan and abroad by the year 2050. To that end, it has adopted more plant-derived resin materials, created recyclable polypropylene, and adopted green materials and other recycled materials.
